A very old man sets out over hills and valleys to find his wife a cat to  cure their loneliness. When he finds a hill “quite covered with cats”, he has such a hard time choosing the prettiest one, that “before he knew it, he had chosen them all.” When he arrives home, his wife is shocked by the sheer volume of them all and suggests that the cats choose amongst themselves which one is the prettiest. A terrible cat fight ensues and in the end, one frightened “homely little cat” is left, whom the old man and woman take into their home and shower with love.
